Henna (scientific name: Lawsonia Inermis) is a heavily scented tree or shrub. This plant grows best in hot weather where there is very little moisture. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Middle East, Southern Asia and Northern Australasia in semi-arid zones. The plant produces a burgundy dye molecule called Lawsone. This dye is primarily concentrated in the leaves of the plant. The art of Henna is often called Mehendi.
What ingredients are used in the Henna Paste?
The Henna paste which is applied on the skin is made from the leaves of the Henna plant. Once the leaves are dried, they are ground into a powder and sifted multiple times. Often, essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Lavender and Cajeput are added to the paste to help the stain become darker. Henna has been used safely for centuries, and has no adverse health effects.
Our ingredients are 100% Natural and Fresh Henna powder, lemon juice, sugar, and a combination of Cajeput, Geranium and Lavender essential oils.
How long does Henna last on the skin?
Henna designs last between 1 to 3 weeks before they fade completely.
What is “Black Henna?”
There is no such thing as “Black Henna.” What often goes by the name Black Henna usually contains PPD (para-phenylenediamine) which is a black chemical dye often found in hair dyes. PPD, which stains the skin jet black, is not safe for body art. PPD is a toxin that can get into the bloodstream through the skin. It can cause damage to kidneys, liver, skin and possibly even cancer. The use of PPD for body art is illegal in Canada. We use 100% Natural and Fresh Henna, so you can rest assured that there is no PPD or any other chemical dye in your Henna paste.
How should I prepare for my Henna appointment?
• Get your manicure and pedicure done before you apply the henna
• Wax your feet and hands a day or two before you get mehendi done
How can I take care of my Henna design so that it lasts longer?
•Keep the Henna paste overnight (or a minimum of eight hours)
•After the suggested time, scrape the paste off.
•Keep water away from the design, and rub oil before showering.
•It takes 24 – 48 hours for the henna to darken fully. The stain will look bright orange immediately after removing the paste, and will slowly darken up to a rich, dark reddish-brown.
•To help your henna design last longer, try not to scrub the area or use exfoliating lotions on it
Can the Henna stain be removed from the skin?
Henna stains don’t wash off quickly. However, you can quicken the demise of the stain by soaking in a hot tub, swimming in a public pool and doing a lot of housework with cleaning products. Water, chlorine and other chemicals are known enemies of the Henna stain.
